Really an original design. First thing, this machine now comes directly in 3S setup thanks to the 1104/6500Kv motors (slower so 3S capable). The main electronic is based on the Eachine Minicube, so a F3 omnibus integrating a betaflight OSD, a 4-in-1 10 ESC BLheli_S/Dshot600 ready. The FPV rig is based on the classic 600TVL 1/4th CMOS FPV camera coupled with a 25mW 48CH VTX. Four choice of BNF versions are proposed: FrSky D8+RSSI, FrSky D16 w/ smart port, FlySky AFHDS-2A and Spektrum DSM2/DSMX.   2. As you may know, Pagoda’s antenna is novel type of circular antenna as can by cloverleaf and mushroom models. For example, if you have a RHCP pagoda antenna, LHCP signals will be deeply rejected and won’t interfere too much with RHCP waveforms and by consequence will decrease statics and increase the FPV range. You have to know for example that first of all a RHCP cleaverleaf antenna emits part of its power with LHCP and second point each diffraction point can potentially transform a RHCP wave into a LHCP one. On the reception antenna, at the end a part of the RHCP signal is then corrupted by a non-negligeable LCHP signal level. Ideally if at emmission, the LHCP can be decreased as maximum and at reception LHCP can be rejected…. the general RX sensitivity will be even better.   3. INTRODUCTION Toygrade clone of the Zerotech Dobby start to emerge in the market. The first one was the Eachine E50. Here is the new revision, the Eachine E52. We still have a brushed machine with foldable arms which can be controlled either with the an iOS/Android app or via a dedicaced radio control. The FPV part is based on a 2.4G WiFi link coupled with a 0.3M camera module. Let’s discover this bundle. BOX CONTENT + 1 x Eachine E52 + 1 x Battery 600mAh LiPo with JST connector + 1 x Transmitter (using 4xAAA batteries not included) + 1 x Smartphone holder + 1 x USB charging cable + 4 x Spare props (2 CW, 2 CCW) + 1 x Wrench prop remover + 1 x Instruction manual (English/chinese) OVERVIEW The similiarities with the original Zerotech Dobby are obvious…. same ovale form when arm are folded, same location of the power button. In term of build material, the similarities stops here.. While for the Dobby we have a high quality ABS plastic stucture, here with the E52, all the main body and arms parts is based on a thin plastic… look a little bit cheapy and not super durable. Only the upper canopy structure uses a mate plastic. Except that, the Eachine E52 is slightly more longer, a 150mm long machine. -FRONT VIEW When arms are unfolded. No specific safety locking system to hold arms opened. They look fragile. When the machine is turned, a green front status LED can be found, not super bright… almost invisible in strong daylight conditions. When the light turn solid it means the radio binding is done successfully. -SIDE VIEW -REAR VIEW Another rear read light indicating also status can be found. A little bit more visible in daylight conditions. -UPPER VIEW In transporation mode, the machine can carrying into a large pocket without problem -BOTTOM VIEW Four small rubber pads as landing skid. Below them, the screws to disassmble the machine. The 2 pins where you will clip the JST connector of the battery. -WEIGHT 86.1g in total… Motors and props A gear system is present to boost general performances. A small originality, motors are installed inside each arm horizontally. LiPo The battery is like the Dobby model, need to be clipsed in the machine. To release it, press latteraly In fact, it’s a JST connector installed on this proprietary battery 1 Cell 600mAh LiPo is simply installed in this plastic housing Camera module Promised to be a wide angle model, in practice it’s not the case … Unfortunatly, it’s a basic pinhole model with a FOV upper bounded to 80 degrees maximum. Very disapointed. More the associated sensor is a poor 0.3Mpx model… clearly a five years old model maybe more. The only good news you can uptilt and downtilt the lens position. More recording’s resolution reaches the poor 640×480@15fps !!!! yes 15fps… Well no miracle with a 2.4G WiFI FPV based solution…. Weird A raw video sample of recorded files As you can see, color’s rendition is white saturated, the light sensitivity very very poor…. Unacceptable for a 2017 model, even for a super cheap one. Transmitter A basic rounded model without any smal LCD display. To control the machine with the radio, you must perform first the binding with the radio, then connect the machine via WiFi to the app. When controlled with the radio, the machine can’t be controlled via the App. Only the photo/video recording can be turned on/off. To calibrate gyroscope, push both sticks in lower right position. The left shoulder button selects one of the three speed mode when shortly pressed and cut motors if longly pressed. The right button run automatic 360 degrees flips. The smartphone holder is compatible with model up to 6″ size. I was not able to identify the RFchip. I unfortunatly was not able to bind the machine with an existing DeviationTX protocols and I don’t know if this machine is compatible with the former Eachine E50. UNBOXING, ANALYSIS AND DEMO FLIGHT First impression, as soon as you pressed the take off button when the altitude hold option is turned on, the machine quit the air quicky and is stabilized perfectly around 1m. The altitude deviation is small in both indoors and outdoors conditions. The machine is relatively silent, it’s a good point. In 30%, the machine is ultra slow… especially the yaw command. Generally, all the three speed mode don’t offer agressive flight attitudes… but more very smoothed controls. The main idea is to capture videos the less shacky as possible. In practice, in outdoors conditions, especially in presence of wind, can be probablematic for example to escape from a tree. The radio control range is good, > 70m. I don’t advise to go further since there is no strong light to help to keep your orientation in LOS conditions. As for all digital based FPV system, the frame rate drop versus distance and above 40m, first freezing appears. It’s not impossible to fly FPV with this machine, but only in large open spaces, at least far from trees. The flight duration are good, more than 6min. I like generally the interface. You can enable/disable a lot of option. For example, you can fly the machine without the barometer assistance for more advanced pilot. You can also control the machine with the “gyroscope” mode, where the position of your smarphone will control the x-y axis. As said previously, the altitude hold works pretty well but won’t disable the x-y drifts since no GPS is here. CONCLUSIONS A small and cheap foldable machine with a good flight time and coltrol/FPV ranges (~50m). Controls are optimized for beginners with smooth deplacements. The design is cool … but I deeply regret the super poor performances of this 0.3W builtin camera… If you plan to shoot super great videos… avoid this model. PROS + Foldable arms + 6min of flight duration + Efficient altitulde hold + Nice Appz + Good radio range with the TX + Lens orientation can be ajusted CONS – Horrible VGA camera – Slow controls even in 100% sport mode – No local video recording, only saved in the smartphone – Prorpriatary battery casing This quadcopter have been courtesy provided by Banggood in order to make a fair and not biased review. The machine officially can welcome 3S LiPo … The FPV rig is the same as for the Tiny 6 and Tiny 6, i.e. an excellent 800TVL camera with a 16CH 25mW VTX…. I guess with the propguard installed and the 350mAh 2S LiPo, this machine should be around 80g…. Without OSD and buzzer, not sure it’s great competitor versus last ARFun 90/Lantian 90L….   6. IMPORTANT: It’s very important to fasten correctly all M2 hexcrews and secure them with a drop of glue. INTRODUCTION The HGLRC XJB-80 is 80mm 3S brushless racer integrating directly a nylon plastic based prop guard. The XJB-80 is a direct competitor of the Eachine chaser 88 or the RealAcc Orange 85 for example. Here we have a machine equiped of a F3 Pikoblx board without OSD, super strong 4-in-1 25A ESC BLheli_S/Dshort 600 board, 1104/7500Kv brushless motors and for the FPV section, a 600TVL CMOS camera + a VTX with switchable output power. This machine can be found in PNP edition or with two choices of receiver: i) a FlySky AFHDS-2A or a ii) FrSky D8 model. BOX CONTENT + 1 x HGLRC XJB-80 + 1 x 3S 550mAh/35C LiPo with JST connector + 4 x 50mm pentablade props + 8 x M2x7mm hexscrews + 1 x 90 degrees microUSB extender + 1 x Instruction manual (English) The bundle is ultra minimalist … a basic packaging for example. No spare props offered … For the price of the machine, it’s definitively a drawback. OVERVIEW -FRONT VIEW The machine presents an X-design where the main electronic tower is rotated of -45 degrees. On top of it, a carbon FPV camera mount installed integrating a solid antenna guard. The main lower plate is 1.5mm 3K carbon based.. Not so bad but not rigid/strong enough to fly the machine without the propguard. The propguard is a unique structure quit robust. To remove this white structure, you will have to remove all the motor’s screws first. With the battery installed and be used as landing skid -SIDE VIEW The microUSB port is available on the lower left side. You will need to plug first the right-angle microUSB adaptor than your favorite microUSB cable on it. The carbon camera support is attached to the main tower structure via the two inner M2 hexscrews, not simply clipsed like for the Aurora 68/90. But be aware, out of the box, these screws were partially loosen. Pay attention to that. The RHCP cloverleaf antenna is perfectly protected by the carbon antenna guard, a more solid structure that we can find for the Aurora 90. Buzzer connexions directly soldered on the F3 Pikoblx board. Generally, it’s advised to add some liquid electrical tape to waterproof all contacts. No possibility to install larger props than 50mm models. -REAR VIEW A buzzer is installed rear … as well as two programmable LED flights. As we will see later, you will have to configure them because out of the box they are turned off. The FrSky D8 receiver is simplly zip-tied on the camera mount. The bind button can be found on the rear side. This receiver was advertized to output the RSSI via telemetry… In practice it’s not the case (luckely there is a buzzer !!!)…. The binding procedure is classic for a FrSky D8 RX: keep pressed this button while powering the machine with the battery then run the binding procedure on your radio. -UPPER VIEW The antenna guard structure is much more solid thanks to this horizontal aluminium standoff -BOTTOM VIEW A battery strap is pre-installed on the bottom side But as you can see, when the battery is installed, the locking surface is relatively small, 1cm maximum … and versus time, when the velcro will start to be used, the risk to loose midflight the battery will be important. It’s advised to install a slightly longer one. -WEIGHT Versus the RealAcc Orange85, this machine is 11g more lighter (135.5g).. MOTORS AND PROPS 1104 motors directly branded by HGLRC … announced to be 7500Kv … so relatively fast for a 3S and eventually a 4S configuration. We have to check if motors don’t nbe too warm after usage. Motors are only attached by two M2x6mm hexscrews … The problem is during the flight, transmitted vibrations make loosen these props !!!!! And you will need to secure their installation by a drop of glue (lockit for example). I even lost one scew midflight!!! Amazing. This is the main drawback of this machine for me…. Can be very dangerous. If you plan to fly without the propguard, be aware, don’t re-install these M2x5mm… they will be too long. Use more some M2x4mm model instead!!!! Props are less fragile and flexible than the 50mm racerstar 2035 models… They are more heavy too… In practice, I found them less correctly balanced than the quadribalde Racerstar model… and some jello is still here in practice… More if you want to push this machine in 4S, a better option should be to install more some triblades or quadriblades models instead. LiPo A 550mAh 3S LiPo with a discharge race of 35C… The choice of an JST connector can be critized. Probably an XT30 connector would have been a better choice. In practice, I am possitively suprized with the autonomy…. A little bit more than 4min not so bad Camera module A 600TVL CMOS 1/4″ NTSC camera… The light sensitivity is not bad at all, a little bit better than the average despite being probably also one 1Lux. The builtin VTX is 40CH (raceband supported) but I appreciate the possibility to set the output power betwwen 25mW,50mW or 200mW. Be aware by default, 0mW is preset !!! so you won’t see any FPV video feedback despite a full channels scanning. What I don’t like, the LED display is not visible because completly hidden but the camera mount. You will need to pull on the rubber band to guess what is displayed on it. To select a Vfreq, just press the button, you will cycle between the 8 Vfreq inside the current selected band. To change the Vband, press more than 3s until the letter will flash. Release the button then shortly press on the button to cycle between the five supported bands. To select the output power, sample principle: long press more than 5s until the current outpower status will flash (0, 1 bar = 25mW, 2 bars = 50mW or 3 bars = 20mW), release then press to cycle between the four choices. The AIO camera is uptilted about 15 degrees but no direct possibility to ajust manually this angle. Disassembling UNBOXING, ANALYSIS, BINDING, CONFIGURATION AND DEMO FLIGHT First thing, the machine comes with Betaflight 3.1.5 installed … almost the last build … but the first bad news: Nothing is configured specifically for the XJB-80 !!! absoluptly nothing … and you will be able to find the main settings to apply on this basic instructions: Not only the receiver settings must be applied (a serial SBUS on UART3), but two important steps must be done for motors while selection first Oneshot125 (not yet Dshot600) 1) Apply motor’s ressource assignation correctly for BF > 3.1 2) Reverse motor’s rotation sens for motors 2 & 3 For 1), you will have to enter the four following commands in CLI: resource MOTOR 5 none resource MOTOR 6 none resource MOTOR 1 A01 resource MOTOR 4 A02 then don’t forget to save by typing save For 2), you can use BLHelisuite software of the Chrome application BLHeliconfigurator. When it’s done, you can now select the Dshot600 option… Another important element is to perform a yaw-alignement with the -45 degrees value. I decided to immediatly upgrade to BF 3.1.7 and you can find all the tutorial installation procedure in the following video: Ok first take off … start to hover from 40-45% not so bad … but it’s noisy … Ok punchout are pretty good ok it’s not a rocket as can be as lighter racer models without propguard, but it’s really not bad No perform to flip and rolls in acro… Thanks to the default BF 3.1.7 PIDs settings, this machine runs smootly … no bouncebacks… That’s great… The machine is fast and respond well … no ton of inertia. A good point for a 120g+ machine. In the other hand, the FPV signal, pretty clear and strong is unfortunatly offering some Jello…. The pentablade props are probably not balanced enough… More, in 6-axis stabilized mode, the machine drifts ….. the Soft tape mounting mod will be a must to do if you plan to fly this machine with such flight mode. Flight duration are also not bad, a solid 4min … As feared, at the end of one of my run, I lost one motor’s screw midflight … I was able to perform an mergency landing luckely… but you can guess it can be super dangerous…. Notice at the end of each run, motors get warm (~3O-40 degrees celcius)… not a good sign for thei durability. I crash it many many time and no damage reported… Anyway, I am not completly 100% sure that this white plastic propguard will resist to a massive frontal crash… A spare one should be stocked by precaution. A general remark… I deeply regret the absence of a builtin OSD… CONCLUSIONS The HGLRC XJB-80 is good and powerfull FPV prop-guarded flyer based on strong 25A ESC. I liked a lot how it’s flying. This machine is more an outdoors flyer, 125g is too much for indoors application. Anyway, two importants points must be revealed: i) you will need to configure everything because it’s not bind and fly machine and ii) you will need fasten glue all M2 hexscrews before your first flight.   8. Joris Favraud and Guillaume Juin, of BigFly, won the “architecture” category at the New York City Drone Film Festival this year for the video featured above. The video is a mind bending journey into the vaulted ceilings of the Saint Louis Cathedral in Paimboeuf, France, and presents the closest we’ve ever gotten to the beautiful paintings and architecture found inside cathedrals. We wanted to pick the directors’ brains on how they pulled the video off, from getting the shots to the work done in post-production, and also hear about how they got permission to shoot inside the cathedral in the first place. — Begin Interview: UAV Coach: Your video takes something most of us have seen (the interior of a cathedral) and makes us look at in a completely new way. Was that your original vision for the project, or what was your artistic goal when you started shooting for the video? Joris and Guillaume: The idea was to create a non-narrative movie that would take us through an immersive discovery of the church. We wanted something epic and dramatic. Also, since our drone can lift a camera and gimbal ON the drone itself, which allows for filming upward at a low angle, we thought this was the ideal situation to see what was possible with the versatile equipment we had. UAV Coach: What were the most challenging parts of making this video? Joris and Guillaume: Flying in the church! Our big heavylifter octocopter is 1,67m wide (that’s 5 and 1/2 feet!), and the church is not as big as you might imagine (the very wide angle lens can let you think this is a big church, but…no). It was a very stressful experience to fly in there. We spent one hour to check every detail in the church that could endanger the drone, and to make sure there wouldn’t be an accident (there was one long wire at the right side that we had to navigate around, after careful inspection). UAV Coach: I believe you said you only shot for one day to create this video. Did you just get a ton of raw footage so you’d have lots of options in post-production, or did you have a detailed plan for the shots you wanted to get? Joris and Guillaume: Indeed, we shot all the footage in just 2-3 hours (and also spent 2 hours preparing before we shot). We planned approximately 2/3 of the shots ahead of time, and the other 1/3 were improvised shots, which ended up pretty good. UAV Coach: How difficult was it to get permission to film inside the Saint Louis Church in Paimboeuf? Joris and Guillaume: It took about 15 days. We had to get permission from both the mayor (who was the owner of the space), and from the priest/church itself. We made some phone calls, sent two letters, and it was all arranged. UAV Coach: How did you first get involved in aerial cinematography? Joris and Guillaume: We are both filmmakers, and were filmmakers before flying drones. We saw a big artistic potential in these new technologies, so we embraced them and created our aerial production company, BigFly. Of course, we started small, just flying a DJI Phantom, but after a while we decided we wanted more and we wanted to offer more to our clients. Joris and Guillaume: The drone industry has moved so quickly these past 5 years. When we see what we were able to accomplish with a crew of just two people, in half a day, that’s crazy. Ten years ago, it would have been impossible to do something like what we did here in this video (or you would have needed a big crew, huge machinery, cranes, etc). So we just can’t imagine what we’re going to see and do in another ten years. We often think that we’ve reach the end of what we can do and need with a drone, but we are always surprised every year by the new technology that continues to come out. As French regulated drone pilots, we feel pretty stifled by drone regulation outside of France, and outside of Europe in general. We just can’t work in many countries. We hope that in the near future, there will be at least some kind of global / European drone regulations created to solve the regulation issue. — What’s better than race cars? Race cars by drone!   12. After laying off a third of its workforce a few months ago, Parrot just announced that they are launching a Professional division focused exclusively on the “prosumer” market. Parrot currently has an expensive line of commercial drones that sell for $11,000 and up, and a line of consumer drones that sell for as little as $100. The new Professional division will focus on the sweet spot between these two extremes, with drones that will be sold in the $1,000 to $5,000 range for small and medium business applications. Drones in this “prosumer”-focused division will be aimed at supporting commercial applications such as construction and agriculture, with tools that can be operated without the need for a professional pilot. This announcement from Parrot comes right on the heels of 3D Robotics releasing the news that they raised $53 million in a series D funding round, with the money raised going to support the growth of their construction-focused platform Site Scan. This news, along with DJI’s recently released Matrice series and Yuneec’s Typhoon H920, is making it look more and more like construction and ag applications may be the biggest new sectors for growth in the drone industry. The Drones of Parrot’s New Professional Division Parrot’s new Professional division will add additional features and technology to existing drones in Parrot’s portfolio—such as the Disco and the Bebop—to make them suitable for construction, agriculture, real estate, and other applications. Three of the drones that have been announced for inclusion in Parrot’s Professional division are basically upgraded versions of the two Parrot drones mentioned above, the Bebop and the Disco. Release date and price haven’t yet been announced for the Thermal. “[The Bebop-Pro Thermal] enables inspection and thermal detection companies, roofers, plumbers, building workers, and also firefighters, to get thermal and radiometry information, live and/or in pictures.” – Parrot website Stiff Competition Parrot is one of the few companies that actually competes with DJI, but the competition is quite stiff. Not long ago Parrot laid off 300 employees, which represented about a third of its drone personnel. Following the layoffs Parrot reorganized to focus on UAVs for commercial applications. This announcement of Parrot’s new Professional division is the first major step forward in this reorganization. The primary cause of Parrot going through such radical restructuring is that they essentially lost the consumer battle to DJI. In the fourth quarter of 2016 Parrot’s consumer sales were down 15%, and projections showed that consumer sales were unlikely to generate profitable growth. DJI holds 50% of the market share for commercial and consumer drones in North America, according to Colin Snow of Skylogic Research. For drones in the $500 to $1,000 price range, DJI held about 36% of the market by units sold in North America last year. In comparison, Parrot captured around 7% of the market in the same price range. However, when it comes to high end commercial drones, Parrot may have a leg up. Unlike DJI, Parrot has been working in the agriculture and construction sectors of the drone industry for many years, primarily through its commercial subsidiary Sensefly, which sells a wide range of drones that range in price between $11,000 and $25,000. The 2000mAh 1200mah builtin is advertized to offer close to 2h of usage… It’s pretty good… The builtin receivers are coupled with a circular RHCP (proximity range) and one hi gain biplanar antenneas (long range). The built PAL D1 (720×576) recorder is also announced to not have any frame lost…but quid about extra latency introduced when recording is turned on ? They announced two seperate chips for solve this problem… Must be checked in practice of course …. What about NTSC sources recordings (756×480) ? You have an AVin latterally.. INTRODUCTION The Eachine Racer 250 was probably the first brushless machine from Eachine…. and since this date, they released so many other models… some were real success stories, some were completly crap. Close to two years later, here is the Eachine Racer 250 Pro edition. In the menu, the same mixed carbon/nylon chassis but all the electronic and motors have been upgraded. Now we have a strong SPF3 board, 20A BLheli_S/Dshot600 ESC, 2205/2300Kv and 1000TVL CMOS FPV camera coupled with a 600mW 40CH VTX w/OSD. Byebye also the 3S setup, this machine comes directly in 4S configuration. Two variants are offered: i) a BNF and ii) a RTH with a FlySky AFHDS-2A solution. Let’s have a look to this new product. BOX CONTENT + 1 x Eachine Racer 250 Pro (with a 4S 1199mAh LiPo with XT60 connector) + 1 x Transmitter (using 4xAA batteries included) + 1 x Charger + 1 x Charger power unit + 1 x 5.8G RHCP cloverleaf antenna + 4 x 2200mAh Ni-Mh AA batteries + 1 x Wrench prop remover too + 1 x Velcro band + 4 x Spare props (2 CW, 2 CCW) + 1 x Instruction manual (English) OVERVIEW The same chassis from the original Racer 250 with two upper and lower carbon plates mixed with nylon arms. It’s a 250mm machine so look now super large versus last introduced/produced racers. The thickness of the carbon element is a bit poor: 1.25mm for both… The big open question is how robust will be these nylon arms … Their design IMHO have been engeenered to be light but strong too. In practice, they are flexible and probably it’s a good thing for absorbing the kinetic energy. Would carbon be a better solution ? probably yes but I guess they wanted to reuse the same chassis as for the ER250. Is-it a catastrophic solution ? In practice …. not at all, I was surprize but thanks to this flexibility … no arm broke. The lower plate is covered with a thin foam to protect it from hard landings. -FRONT VIEW With the strong white LED’s light turned on. By default they are turned off. You will need to trigger them thanks to the tiny switch installed on the front left side. The light are strong enough for night flights -SIDE VIEW On front, a tiny button can turn on/off the front light. Be sure also to push insde all remaining connectors coming from the main receiver cable… It can block a prop mid-flight if not. The left side shows the microUSB connector and the full PWM wiring associated with the non iBUS FlySly AFHDS-2A receiver. The battery is strapped on top but for a better fixing, the velcro band should be installed to secure the installation. By default the two 2.4G are trapped into the upper camera mount .. in contact with the carbon structure… not a very good choice the 2.4G range -REAR VIEW 3 LEDs are present in the rear section… They are not programmable via Cleanflight or Betaflight but thanls to a 3 position DIP switch, you can select one of seven colors. The rear lights can be turned off too. The bottom rear side welcomes the 600mW VTX, the XT60 main lead connector and the 3 non-programmable LED’s lights First in term of robustness, since this rear part is not linked with the upper carbon plate, I strongly fear that a bad crash will probably break it just front the VTX. Definitvely some aluminimum linkers would increase a lot the robustness of the rear part. My second concern is about the VTX RP-SMA connector …. in case of crash, this connector will be broken/unsoldered via the 5.8G antenna … and few second later, the VTX will burn since no more 50ohms load to spread the power. … It’s real design problem …. and no obvious way to shield this part… Maybe to install the RP-SMA more horizontally could be the trick to do. The VTX offers one unique button. If shortly pressed on it, you will be able the shift down the OSD informations displayed, at least for 5 différents position. If you long press on it, you will cycle between the 40CH Vfreq…. It can be a bit long to select your favorute Vfreq since no direct VBand selection can be done first. At least a good news, a mic is installed and the shound is broadcasted. -UPPER VIEW Good news we have individual ESC … simply zip-tied If you break an arms, you will need to resolder associated wires on the lower carbon plate. -BOTTOM VIEW -WEIGHT A total of 472.7g so clearly more than 30g saved versus the original Racer 250 (in 3S !!!) Motors and props 2205 motors … 2300Kv … No specific mark on them … In practice, they are lifting the machine in a beasty way … Imagine it hover from 35-40% of throttle … 5mm of shaft section Super pitchy triblade props 5048. In practice, they perform great IMHO… more the machine is relatively silent with … Anyway, balancing must be check/done probably to remove part of the jello LiPo Exactly the same 4S LiPo as for the Eachine Racer 180, a strong 30C 1100 mAh model. No swag has been reported. Offer a solide 5min of usage. Camera module A 1000TVL CMOS Camera sensor working with both NTSC and PAL (default) systems. Now it’s possible to ajust the uptilt angle but red aluminium front plate limits the max angle to 25 degrees. Above, the video signal will present some occlusions. The best mod is to saw the metal upper rounded element to free the vision A raw video sample from the FPV camera As you can see … some jello is here …. in practice the jello amount dépends also of the uptilt angle. Install some piece of foam latterally to remove it. The light sensitivity is correct, relatively crips thanks to the 1000TVL resolution and the sound recorded… Transmitter A classic FlySky i6 rebranded by Eachine. By default, you can’t enter into the menu directly. You will need to press inner both horizontal trim buttons .while powerfing the radio. It’s a 6-channel model working with the AFHDS-2A protocol (a good news for the failsafe behaviour). We have three 2-way switches and one unique three-way (for the flight mode selection for example). WIth the AFHDS-2A and the diversity receiver, no problem to achieve long range flight (> 400m without problem). Notice no D/R and radio failsafe are set by default. UNBOXING, ANALYSIS, CONFIGURATION AND DEMO FLIGHT The machine comes with a super outdated cleanflight firmware installed (1.13) … and from now last CF configurator build can’t even open settings. You can find attached the dump of factory settings. I strongly advise to install immediatly betaflight. Thanks to it, the failsafe behaviour is much safer (motors stop after 2s) vs Cleanflight. The flashing is direct… and I kept the default PIDs settings. I just increased to 800deg/s pitch and rolls rates. First take off…. and from 35-40% the machine is hovering…. you can feel a lot of power, the throttle a little bit touchy. The machine is silent too at least at low RPM…. It’s a good news…. Ok first pouchout …..and whooooooaaaahhhhhhhhhh it’s a rocket !!!!! impressive despite 473g. With Betaflight, the machine flies just great !!! so smooth…. no bouncing, no oscillation. Just great. HD camera recordings are less impacted by the jello …. but I don’t know if the poor thickness of the structure favorize vibrations or the poor balancing of the prosps but not a super accaptable result. As you can see, after the “monster” crash, arms resist well …. and only the VTX connector was bent A bit lucky on this one I can admit … but in practice I crashed several time and finally the flexibility of the arm must absorbe without breaking the kinetic energy free during impacts Flight time are also pretty good, more than 5min with the 1100mAh LiPo not bad CONCLUSIONS In practice the ER250 Pro is a great and powerfull machine as soon as betaflight is installed. Punchout are impressive. It fiies fast and the ER250 Pro is a super acro machine with a good flight time. The FPV rig is also good, with a strong VTX including a basic OSD module. My main concern is about the chassis … probably too thin to resist to a hard rear crash, to remove completly jello in the FPV signal and let the VTX RP-SMA connector vulnarable.   19. More than year ago was introduced the JYU hornets a brushless 250mm with clipsable modules: FPV and gimbal hi-res camera modules. If the idea was original, this model was in practice relatively disapointing …: fragile plastic frame, poor FPV range and super short flight time with the gimbal module.   20. INTRODUCTION The Eachine VR007 Pro is nothing than the upgraded version of the Eachine VR007, probably the cheapest basic 5.8G FPV goggles available in the market. In this new first entry bundle, we still have a 4.3″ LCD display but with a brightness increased to 500cd/m². The builtin 5.8G VRX supports 40CH and is advertized to have -95dBm in sensitivity so in theory should double the FPV range (range is doubled every gain of 6 dBm). Finally, the battery is also upgraded almost doubling the capacity. Let’s discover this bundle. BOX CONTENT + 1 x Eachine VR007 Pro + 1 x 1600mah 1S LiPo with DC connector + 1 x USB to microUSB cable + 1 x 5.8G linear antenna with RP-SMA connector + 1 x Fresnel lens clearning kit + 1 x Instruction manual (English) OVERVIEW The right side welcomes three buttons respectively referenced as “+”,”-“,”M” in the instruction. There are used to increase/decrease a setting value and to enter into the display’s menu where you can ajust brightness, contrast, saturation, aspect ratio and the language. The “+” button can also directly cycle between the five supported Vband while the “-” cycles among the 8 Vfreq in the current selected Vband. Notice, there is no possibility to ajust the fresnel lens distance via slider button …. a real drawback for old myopic eyes. Personnally, it’s not perfectly focused (got 6/10 right now snifff snifff :(, I used to have 12/10 in the past) Notice also the absence of an AVout …. so no direct possibility to record your FPV session The 5.8G antenna connexion is done via a RP-SMA connector To open the goggles, remove the 4 screws … The mask border is covered with a basic facial sponge.. With high temperature, you will probably sweat a lot with. 120mm … is a little bit narrow for large head… I would say for non-asiatic heads.   24. The FAA recently released its very first round of UAS Facility Maps. For those of us who have been waiting for a smoother way to request airspace authorization, this is a huge deal. The maps cover 268 airports nationwide, which includes about 40,000 square miles of airspace. 85% of the areas covered in the maps show specific areas and altitudes where drones may be authorized to fly safely. The maps are the first step in rolling out the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC), a system for drone traffic control that the FAA hopes to have fully online by the end of 2017. Above is a screenshot we took of the map of the airspace near Nashville. You can see right away that the airspace is class E, which is restricted and requires airspace authorization. More importantly, you can see that the ceiling for flying is 0, which means that you probably won’t have any luck with that authorization request if that’s where you want to fly. Here’s another example, taken from the FAA website, where you can see the ceiling heights grow as the area grids fan out from the airport: This first rollout is significant, and represents a noteworthy step toward greater transparency about the information that goes into approving and rejecting airspace authorization requests. Want to see the maps? See the FAA’s UAS map of the U.S. here. To dive into a specific region, just double click on any of the little dots that appear on the map to zoom in. Why Is This Rollout Such a Big Deal? The reason these maps are so important for commercial drone pilots is because they’re the first real tool pilots have to help them understand—and expedite—the airspace authorization process. Up to this point, pilots have simply had to submit the authorization paperwork using the FAA’s Online Waiver Portal (which is confusingly named, since it receives both waiver requests and airspace authorization requests). After pilots submit, they sit around and wait…sometimes for months. That is a really hard situation to be in if you’re running a small business. But now, with the use of these maps, a pilot can immediately get insight into the likelihood of getting approval. As noted above, if you see that the ceiling for the area you want to fly in is 0, well, you probably shouldn’t waste your time submitting the authorization paperwork, or waste your client’s time waiting around to see if it gets approved. And if you know if you need to fly above 100 feet for a certain project, again, you now know not to bother asking for the authorization if the area in question has a ceiling of 100. It’s important to note that these maps do not represent a way to bypass the airspace authorization process. That is, you can’t simply look at the FAA UAS map, assess the airspace, and go fly. “UAS Facility Maps show the maximum altitudes around airports where the FAA may authorize part 107 UAS operations without additional safety analysis.” – FAA website That being said, UAV pilots can certainly use the information provided in the maps with an expectation that a request informed by the information on the maps has a high likelihood of being approved, and also of being approved more quickly. How Was the LAANC Program Created? The FAA has rejected a massive 71 waiver requests and 854 airspace applications. – The Drone Girl And they’ve surely rejected a lot more since the article quoted above was first published back in October of 2016. These rejections, and the delays pilots have experienced in the waiver and airspace authorization process, are a big deal for the FAA. To address the problem, the FAA selected 12 companies to participate in a working group to try and find a solution. The end result was the creation by the FAA of the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) program. In its final form, LAANC will allow an operator to plan a flight, submit that flight plan to the FAA, and receive automatic approval if the flight plan remains within the preselected airspace volumes. The FAA expects this automatic approval system to be live by the end of the year, but it’s possible operators won’t have to wait until then to take advantage of the new system. – Matt Fanelli, Senior Manager for Strategy at Skyward (one of the 12 companies that helped create the LAANC) What’s Next? More maps are expected to be released by the FAA over the next six months. INTRODUCTION The Lantian 90L now also known as XFX90 is direct competitor of the Eachine Aurora 100, the ARfun90, i.e. a compact 90mm brushless FPV racer including a F3+OSD FC, strong 1104/7500Kv brushless motors and 10A BLheli_S/Dshot 600 ESC. The FPV rig is based on 520TVL CMOS camera coupled with a 25mW/40CH 5.8G VTX. To be honest, the caracteristics are very close from the two quoted machines and known to be great little FPV machines. Ideal to bypass the 250g limitation emerging in most countries. Let’s discover this bundle. First remark, I probably received a pre-release version. Since the shipping date, the Lantian 90L have been rebranded for XFX90 and some upgrades have been done. So this review can be considered as a lower bound of this value since improvements are now available. BOX CONTENT + 1 x Lantian 90L (with a 2S 380mAh LiPo with MicroLOSI connector) + 1 x USB charging cable + 4 x Spare 1935 props (2 CW, 2 CCW) + 1 x Hexscrewdriver + 1 x Battery strap Notice at least for the first batch, no instruction manual … and a simple regular black box with a basic sticker. OVERVIEW The machine takes an H design … and both the upper and lower carbon structure got 1.5mm of thickness… the same as for the Aurora 100 BUT, the arms are plain carbon based.. No hole in the middle of arms. IMHO, it should be much more solid. I am not afraid like I was for the Aurora 100 (now some 2mm and 2.5mm lower plate can be found for it) -FRONT VIEW The machine comes with the triblades DYS 2030 pre-installed. The FPV camera is well protected Inside the frame. Notice the prop guard system is exactly the same as for the KingKong GT90. They remove the front plastic connector to reduce the occlusion in the FOV introduced by the prop guard. A linear antenna has been prefered instead of a cloverleaf antenna. Probably a good choice for the durability versus crash/time. with the battery installed beneath -SIDE VIEW The left sde welcomes the microUSB port of the F3 omnibus FC. No problem to insert the plug. No need to remove the propguard or a prop. In practice, no extra room to install props larger than 2″. The right side shows the receiver and ESC connexions directly soldered on the FC and ESC board respectively. I advised to secure the soldering job by adding some liquid electrical tape, hot glue. Be sure to well secure the battery’s strap if you don’t want any contact with props mid-air -REAR VIEW The Buzzer is located and well protected on the rear side …. Notice the presence of a microLOSI connector !!! clearly imcompatible with 3S batteries…. But good news, with last batch of the Lantian 90L/XFX90, they changed the microLOSI connector for a XT30 model… Clearly the perfect choice. -UPPER VIEW The access to the VTX is possoble via the frontal hole but … something really strange, I can’t see button to set the Vfreq/VBand of the VTX. -BOTTOM VIEW With the battery installed As you can see, compare to the Aurora 100, the arms look much more solid despite being also 1.5mm Be default the battery strap is not pre-installed … and you will need to remove first the four scews to install it … why they didn’t pre-install it ? -WEIGHT Close to 94g with the batter strapped so close to 10g more heavier than the Eachine Aurora 100. Motors and props 1104 bruhsless motors with 7500KV announced so … clearly 3S compatible but the microLOSI connector will limit a lot the 3S juice. Luckely for the XFX90, the replace it for an XT30 able to handle 3S juice without problem. Pre-installed, the triblades DYS 2030 props…known to introduce some jellos in videos. The penta 1935 spare props provided represents a slightly better choice but the best trade off in term of thrust, duration and jello effect is without the racerstar quadriblade 2035 LiPo With the first batch of the Lantian 90L, two 380mAh 2S LiPo are provided with a discharge rate of 30C Notice now the machine is shipped with 450mAh 2S LiPo with XT30 connectors… Definitively a good news for the 3S comptability, the thrust and the flight duration Camera module The 520TVL CMOS camera AIO module is seated into a 3D printed and uptilted mount. The uptilt angle is about 20 degrees. No posibility to ajust this angle. I was not completly sure but …. unfortunatly I can’t see button to select the Vfreq/Vband for the AIO module Amazing !!!! It’s locked at the Vfreq = 5765Mhz = A7 : (… The camera broadcasts in PAL format. Notice just rear the VTX PCB and front the main 4-in-1 ESC board, a small Vreg to feed the AIO with +5V. Disassembling Just remove the four M2 screws to access to the main electronic. The FrSky receiver is just installed… not taped or protected from other electronic elements. The bind button can be triggered externally. No real need to remove the top canopy carbon plate. On the right the SBUS connexion for the FrSky D8 receiver and on the right connexions for the buzzer and lights.. Everything is directly soldered. The buzzer board UNBOXING, ANALYSIS, BINDING, CONFIGURATION AND DEMO FLIGHTS As you can see I was in shock to not see any Vfreq/Vband buttons … probably a broken module. So I am confident in the final release, no problem to select one of the 40CH. The machine came with Betaflight 3.1 without any specific tunnings (please find attached anyway the default dump file settings) … even the receiver was not correctly cnfigured …. Clearly, I am even not sure they test it in real conditions…. Anyway, I advise immediatly to upgrade to BF 3.1.7 fixiing some bugs and improving generally the stability especially wuth Dshot600 compatible ESC. After this “bad” first impressions….I applied the same settings as for the Aurora 100 First take off … clearly with the prop guard installed and the microLOSI connector, punchouts are absoluptly not impressive as it can be for the Aurora 100 or the ARFun 90…. Don’t be wrong, it’s not bad at all and no problem to jump over trees out of the box. With BF 3.1.7 and applied settings, the machine runs superbly … whaoo so so smooth… we can’t even notice the negative impact of the prop guard in the stability. As expected with the DYS 2030 props… some (little) jellos are introduced. Nothing catastrophic by the way. The flight time with these 380mAh are short, around 2min30… max 3min… It’s not enough and the guilty is the connector. I did some extra test with a 400mAh battery (of the Eachine FB30) and flight time have been boosted about close to 1min (30% more). The light sensitivity os the FPV camera is correct but far to offer the best performances especially in low contrast condition. No miracle with a 1lux cheap module. THe FPV range with the linear antenna is correct Inside a radius of 50m. After many breakups occur. At least any Flip of Death have been reported and it’s great !!!! …. What a shape that the FrSky D8 receiver don’t output any RSSI information at least for the OSD part. CONCLUSIONS Partial conclusions can be done my version of Lantian 90L. First of all, I do believe my AIO module was not the correct one … and the non-possibility to select the Vfreq/Vband will be obviously solved in the final batch. The introduction of the XT30 connector associated with stronger 450mAh will not only boost punchouts but also flight time. With my microLOSI version, results are already almost acceptable. Anyway, and it’s the more important.the main electronic elements are pretty good. A strong F3 omnibus including an OSD, strong 1104/7500Kv 3S compatible, 10A BLheli_S/Dshot 600 4-in-1 themselve also 3S compatible represent the main pro points of the Lantian 90L.
