DJI Launches Inspire 2 and Phantom 4 Pro

We wrote a month ago on here about a shipping delay DJI had in getting the Mavic out to eager customers. Well, we’re glad there weren’t any delays in the launch of DJI’s Inspire 2 and Phantom 4 Pro, because we just don’t think we could take the suspense!

We have plenty to say about the Inspire 2 and the Phantom 4 Pro, but let’s kick off this article by sharing some images of these beautiful bad boys.

Cameras, cameras, cameras

It’s no surprise that one of the distinguishing features for both of these new models is the incredibly high quality of the cameras.

While the Inspire 1 included an HD video transmission system 360 degree rotating gimbal, and a 4k camera, the Inspire 2 has an even faster video transmission system, and has two—TWO!—cameras.

The Inspire 2 has an all new image processing system that records at 5.2K in CinemaDNG RAW, Apple ProRes and more. In addition, it allows for streaming video from an onboard FPV camera and the main camera simultaneously.

If that’s not enough for you drone videography fans out there, the Inspire 2 can sense and avoid, with forward and downward vision systems to enable it to detect obstacles up to 30 meters ahead, allowing for protected flight at up to 34mph. Upward facing infrared sensors scan obstacles 16ft (5m) above, adding protection when flying in enclosed spaces.

Camera Features on the Phantom Pro 4

The Phantom 4 Pro is equipped with a 1-inch 20-megapixel sensor capable of shooting 4K/60fps video and Burst Mode stills at 14 fps. Due to some new innovations with the design of the airframe involving the adoption of titanium and magnesium alloy to make the frames stronger and lighter (get that!), the Phantom 4 Pro weighs about the same as the Phantom 4.

Price Points

At $2,999.00, the Inspire 2 is not for the novice. With the launch of this new drone, DJI clearly maintains their grip on the professional videography drone market. Though the price may sound steep, the incredible quality of the images it can capture will more than make up the pricetag for those serious filmers out there who make a living in the drone videography space. In addition, filmmakers will be attracted to the Inspire 2 as a great option for aerial shots.

The Phantom 4 Pro comes in at a less expensive $1,499.00, making it a good drone for serious hobbyists or for those trying to start their professional drone videography careers.

As The Verge recently put it:

“DJI has a chokehold on the consumer drone market, and it’s leveraging that dominance to try and establish itself as the clear leader for commercial drones used by professionals as well. When it introduced the Inspire 1 back in November of 2014, the company said it was trying to bridge the gap between hobbyists and Hollywood. The Inspire 1 was expensive, but not totally out of reach for the average consumer.”
